Yes We Can

I couldn't not write about Barack Obama. He epitomizes so much of what I believe in.

Young, not tainted and full of ideas. But what excites me most about him, he's multicultural and is willing to talk to anybody and to listen and solve.

Ever since I read about Alexander the Great, I have been drawn to one world one race. As he conquered almost half the world, Alexander saw how race and religion polarized people and hence, in his short life, he encouraged mixed marriages to try and create one race in his kingdom.

Barack Obama has Kenyan parentage; an American mother, he had an Indonesian stepfather, he lived in Indonesia and has Malaysian relatives. That's what I love.

But apart from economics etc, he is willing to talk and communicate and understand other views. The world needs him. The only way to solve the Palestinian problem is to talk to them, the only way to understand Cuba is to listen and the only way to understand Iran is to talk to them and he appears willing to do so.

Yes we can. For 6 years I have been saying believe the unbelievable, dare to dream and never take no for an answer. AirAsia and so many of my staff have, and I suppose we all said yes we can.

For whatever her sins, America has once again led the world. It has shown that it will choose the best man for the job whatever the colour. Meritocracy rules. That is why whatever happens they always are able to innovate be it Apple or Google or eBay or Hollywood. Because they allow free speech which allows free minds which allows innovation and meritocracy.

We are blessed in Malaysia with a melting pot of races. It should be our brand. As the Swiss are known for their precision, we should be known for the only country that has such great ethnic groups.

Barack Obama has given hope to all in the world that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Believe the unbelievable
Dare to dream
Never take no for an answer

Yes we can.

Make your dreams come true and believe. The power of belief is enormous.

> The power of belief is enormous. It adds a huge, tremendous, zillion amount of weight to this word when it came out of a billionaire (like you). I believe now.

Thanks for the nice article once again. You are absolutely right about President Obama and I truly hope that he continues his will to talk and listen. All good leaders spend some time to listen, either to the colleagues, staff, customers, suppliers and am not shy to bring forward real issues to the table. Of course, here in Malaysia we don't really appreciate the speciality and uniqueness of our county. What a shame. I guess the phrase "Believe the unbelievabe, dare to dream and never take no for an answer" has been the motto of many of us these days. ;-) Cheers.

Tony, I share your thoughts about Barack Obama and as far as the situation in Malaysia is concerned, it would be ideal to project ourselves as a multi cultural and plural society. But all too often, we only try to emphasize our differences and the tourism promo tag line Malaysia Truly Asia often rings hollow to me.

I echo with your thoughts...America have become and proven to be politically colour blind. America's political maturity and believe in meritocracy have to be much admired. Before the final showdown with McCain, he had Hillary Clinton to contest with and when Hillary lost, she then said she will fully support Obama. Retired four-star Gen. Colin Powell, the first secretary of State in George W. Bush's Republican administration, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama just before the elections and when McCain conceded the white flag, he conceded gracefully, praising Obama and offering him his full support. You've got the vanquished throwing support and not rotten eggs to the victor and you have a well respected former secretary of state of the REPUBLICAN party endorsing a Democrat candidate. Not sure you will find these scenario anywhere in the world, especially in Asia. Our neighbours accross the causeway who often advocates in public that they are the true believers of meritocracy, certainly did not help their public image, when the current PM on Sunday made a statement that the Republic island is not ready for a Prime Minister of an other race for now. I guess what I'm trying to say is, political change (migrating away from race/creed/colour of the skin based politics) will only happen when there is a real political will to change and society trully embracing meritocracy. Until then, we can only hope... P.S - The Obamamania factor has certainly sparked a new believe in people globally, but I sincerely hope he will be able to manage the many issues the world is facing right now (the economic meltdown, wars, oil/currency speculation, etc). To quote Dr. Martin Luther King "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy" ....

Tony, the world admires Obama is unprecedented and nobody in his life have seen anything like this before. This is a proof to what you said " believe unbelievable" He gives hope to the whole world. And we hope, he can make it. Maybe it is not too much if I say here, Tony many people out there specifically in Malaysia admire you as much they admire Obama - including me. You have proven it in 6 years. We hope Obama will proof it too while he is in oval office.

My belief is that America is apologising to the world for Bush's second term in electing a fresh and dynamic person to turn it around. We all have hope and faith in Obama and wish to see change not only in the colour or race of a President but change in the mentality of a country's citizenry. Back home though, we voted for change and we're seeing it slowly. So slowly that i still have no parking space when I come to the office, there are still potholes in our roads, drains are clogged, garbage overflowing and still lots of redtape to get through just to get one thing done. In my opinion its starting to look like the same horse with a different head. I do understand its going to take time to change all that the predecessors have done in over 20 years in the state of Selangor and i am patient but as a voter who opted for change i'm waiting to see how it affects my daily dilemmas. With AirAsia the change was visible from the start and its a success story but like most big corporations go, the ease of transacting is lacking and needs to be addressed. Datuk Seri Tony, you are now an influential person whom we feel is one of us, would you say that you now find it easier to deal with the government of today or that of yesterday? Are they more open to change and speed in expediting applications? Politically though we have mudslinging going on in Parliament and name calling as well as behaviour not acceptable in a primary school child and these are our elected officials who are supposed to represent the people. I'm glad we don't have Parliamentary sessions telecast live or we'd be the laughing stock of our region. Worst part, nothing seems to be getting done. I didn't elect them to have verbal sparring sessions, I elected them to make change and get things done... to improve the way we live our lives in this great nation we call home...Malaysia. That said, I think they are doing good but have a mountain of work ahead of them...and they are chipping away painstakingly slowly at that mountain and uncovering surprises with every step.I hope they will persevere in the face of the task ahead and i will patiently await the changes promised.

Thanks for your analysis, Tony. Hope to hear more analysis from you especially about the oil price slide to $60. Why would our government made a statement that they wouldn't budge on our petrol price less than RM1.92 even the market price continuously dropping? Take care!

hi, Mr Tony. i read a magazine on your air asia plane, on the way to kota kinabalu a year ago. You said that, believe the unbelievable, dream the impossible, never take no for an answer. This term has become a encouragement in my life. ya, i believe that. Yes, we can!!

Hi Tony, as much as Obama is a great inspiration to many Americans, you Tony is also an inspiration to us Malaysians. Air Asia has come a long way from the days of the sleepy Eagle-head logo airline it once was (I doubt that many people are aware of its previous existence). Now it's the best known budget airline in SE Asia and increasingly Australia and the rest of Asia. It's been said many times before, and I will say it again, good job Tony! You've done us proud.

Hi Tony, You made my dream come true, i wouldn't believe XL Promo is only £1000 pounds and Economy Pro for just £198 return. I used to redeem Emirates Skywards Miles for business class upgrade. Looking forward to try one-way XL LON-KUL in July :). Thank you!

Us, students are eternally grateful. Our parents are now more at ease when we say we wanna be home for holidays! Thank you!!

Yes, never underestimate the power of belief! But belief is much more than just saying or affirming that you believe, it is substantiating what you say you believe in with rock solid purpose-driven action. Only then is that belief complete and meaningful.

G'day Tony... What an inspiring article there, from the AirAsia head honcho himself... And for your phrase "Make your dreams come true and believe. The power of belief is enormous" is so true... Isn't this what made you transform a loss-making airline into the profit-generating behemoth of today? Anyway, thanks for everything and I'll certainly remain a loyal AirAsia supporter, Tony!
