Hanging out in Bali

14 February 2009. Valentine's Day.

Resort in Jimbaran, Bali.

Sun, sea, sand.

Nope, not really happening.

Have been having hours of meeting with 50 or so of senior management in the resort locked up in a windowless room discussing the strategy moving forward. Its been good to just get away with the senior staff and just reflect on the year.

Just stepped out to take a breather and to put up this post up before I get back to grappling with the issues at hand. Will be stepping back in soon to continue to talk shop and how best to be a better team in these trying times ahead. Key themes of our discussion has been on looking after our people and having a direction for their development. There is a need to continue to encourage innovation, and improving communication. These times of bonding keeps us focused on what we need to do in order to grow an ASEAN brand.

Really looking forward to the end of today, to the barbecue on the beach. And great music of course. Todays Valentine's Day as well and I would like to wish all couples a Happy Valentine's Day from Bali. Would like to thank all who have also been showing me real love and have been supporting me and my blog. Have some amazing pics from here and will find time to upload them in my gallery when I get back. Signing off with love.

hi Tony.
I'm happy to hear your achievements nowadays.

Hey, we suppose to meet during my event last year. You suppose to be the speaker on that night. CASFUMAL 2009. I'm not sure whether you still remember it or not.

But yet, your secretary, Jacky manage to ask Azran to replace you. Haha
Honestly, all of us quite dispointed when we heard that you not able to join us. Hwver, we understand your situation on that day.

Owh ya, just to let you know, currently I am doing my practical at France. And hoping that AirAsia could have at least one flight to here. Hehe....

K Tony. Hope we could keep in touch each other.

Have a nice day!

Regards,
Firdaus

Hey Tony, I am Daniel Lim, a final year undergrad at Singapore university. It's my first time leaving a comment on your fantastic blog. Hope you had a great BBQ session by the beach and a great trip at Bali. It is always great and nice to have a getaway in midst of hectic life. I had never tried any LCC before. And AirAsia is the first airline that expose me to the world of LCC. I had always heard of the innovations that AirAsia had made and constantly changing and improving. That makes me wanna book on AirAsia and experience it for myself. I had booked myself at the end of this month to do a trip from KUL-PEN n i am looking forward to that trip. Last but not least, Wishing you and your wife a loving Valentine Day and to all other reader of the blog a Happy Valentine/Friendship Day. Continue to work hard and bring in innovation and i am sure you'll see great rewards. I wish AirAsia will continue to be leading LCC in Asia. Cheers!

Hi, Thanks for visiting my hometown, Mr Tony, although I'm not around there. Hope you really like Bali and would come back next time. By the way, do you have any idea of proposing a Singapore-Bali route instead of taking plane from Senai? Looking for your forward response. Have a great holiday.
thanks. bali singapore will start end of march. has taken me 6 years to get this route

Hi Tony,

Being honest, I thought you were off ya mind when you left the high powered job to start AirAsia. I have to admit that you have made me your fan after seeing what you can do with such limited resources and turned it around. I am impressed.

I noted the similarities between Southwestern and AirAsia and I had to keep it to myself because I didn't wanna get sued. My management papers had SouthWestern as a topic and one of the questions was about me writing about another LCC in the region where I was from and simple enough, it was AirAsia.

I would seriously relish the chance of meeting you in person and having a lively chat. And congratulations on the Stansted-LCCT route. Now everyone can definately fly to London ... Cheers..

Hey Tony!!! Firstly Happy Valentine's Day!!!! Wish u have a good time for u to chill down a bit from your work!!!! But isn't Sun Sea and Sand are Better in Australia?????Ha....... Work hard and Play hard la!! Tony!!!! That' suits your image!!!! I think within ASEAN, you might be able to built another hubs elsewhere for a better growth. Because i think your network you have now is really good. Instead of a spider web network, you have been grow like a "Ryanair" Mass lines network!!! That's what my point of view for a LCC to grow in a region!!! Finally, have fun in Bali!!!! P.S: Is Air Asia planning to do any Flight between Sydney to KL?? (Or anywhere close to SYD, besides OOL.)
thanks a lot. if we get the rights sydney will start in september. you are right on thenetwork

Hi Datuk Seri Belated Valentine's. Valentine in Bali, THE place people would want to be, by the beach, sunset, waves, anyway I was happy at home in KL with my beloved other half. It is 28 loving yrs for us and still hoping for more. Wishing you the same. Still pushing ahead for our affiliation with the Ice Skating Union, so depressing, but will never give up. All those skaters DREAMS rely on my pursuit to get it and whenever the going gets tough you come into the picture and I remember those words , GO FOR THAT DREAM AND NEVER GIVE UP. We will be recognised soon hopefully and you will see a Msian ice figure skater in the international competitive scene soon. Hope to see you at our Nationals on 10 & 11 April , Pyramid Ice. We have our Msian skaters coming from USA to participate too. Keep SMILING!

Hi Tony, with the world economy in a frenzy, has this impacted the plans you have for the coming year? Don't worry, I am not a reporter. I am just curious to know how does one plan for the unknown.

Hi, Tony I am familiar with both KLIA and Singapore's Changi Airport. Why do I get the impression that KLIA is backsliding while Changi is enhancing it's already formidable reputation? Is it a reflection on the capabilities of Malaysia Airports (MAHB) versus that of Singapore's CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore) - the latter is due to be corporatised soon? Why, for instance, are British Airways and Qantas having significant operations at Changi and ignoring KLIA (from which they pulled out many years ago)? After all, KLIA is just as strategically located as Changi on the "kangaroo route" between Australia and the UK, right? Is it politics - where the Singapore government has been aggressive in signing "open skies" agreements with many countries? Or is it because the Singapore government has explicitly stated that Changi's regional air hub status is more important to the country's economy than the survival of Singapore Airlines? MAHB seems to be mired in a miasma of complacency, and it shows, as far as KLIA is concerned. I recall that many years ago, MAHB had said that KLIA would be benchmarked against the best airports in the world. Years have gone by and the results of the benchmark studies have yet to be released. Also, going by the CAAS financial statements, it appears that just one airport (Changi) generates more revenue and profit than all the Malaysian airports (with the exception of Senai Airport in Johor Bahru) combined under the MAHB umbrella. Why is this?
