Just wrapping up in London and heading back to K.L. It has been a terrific two weeks, a time of celebration (AirAsia X's inaugural flight to London on March 11), a time of frenetic activity (global media interviews, negotiations with bankers, discussions on sponsorship, etc.) and also a time for reflection, with several days spent in the south of France.

Now we just need to keep the momentum going. When the whole world seems to be enveloped in doom and gloom,

We're pushing ahead with our plans for expansion, launching new routes (several from Indonesia to Singapore next week, while AirAsia X's maiden flight from Kuala Lumpur to Tianjin, China, takes off April 2) and promoting Kuala Lumpur as the regional hub for low-cost travel.

Meantime, have been keeping track of the developments at home and thought the quote below seemed apt in the circumstances:

“There is nothing more powerful than inspirational leadership that unleashes principled behavior for a great cause. What makes a company or a government sustainable is not when it adds more coercive rules and regulations to control behaviors. It is when its employees or citizens are propelled by values and principles to do the right things, no matter how difficult the situation. Laws tell you what you can do. Values inspire in you what you should do. It’s a leader’s job to inspire in us those values.”

Will be posting my thoughts next week on Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and KLIA-EAST; more so on how this decision and the treatment by the government on the final decision will be pivotal in dictating the future of Malaysian businesses.

Hi Tony, Congratulations on your achievements to date - you and your team have done a great job despite the odds. I note that the AA staff will "die" for you on many occasions - such is their determination to make AA the best and most successful aviation industry player in Malaysia. In many ways, you have given them inspirational leadership and continue to do so. Governments are supposed to provide conditions for businesses to thrive, thereby generating wealth for the country. I hope that our present govt. remembers that! I am sure you will continue to lead from the front. If you are true to your guiding principles, you will be able to continue to make good decisions. With everyone behind you (even your Guests), I am sure its only a matter of time before things will move your way. All the best to you on your expansion in 2009 and beyond! :)

Hi Tony,
I was happy to read your story in The Economist, and I read something about you that was never covered in the M'sian media! Nice one. This is about the first time the Economist has a feature on successful M'sians!
You mentioned Sir Laker: my lasting impression of Sir Laker was him standing on the tarmac with his pockets emptied out when Laker's went bust! I know this will never happen to AA or you but just a reminder for you and your team to strive to do better and soar higher!!
we will do our best to avoid that. hopefully the malaysian goverment will give us a level plying field

Hi Tony, kudos on making Airasia a household Brand. You are the true epitome of Malaysia Boleh in the best way possible. The Branding & Promotion efforts of Airasia in just unbelievable. This is what happens when the Brand starts from the head and spreads like wildfire throughout the organisation. Tony, you're an inspiration for many of us. Please don't let the naysayers bring your spirits down with their objections on your expansion plans and all. We want you to know that we got back, mate! Cheers.

Hi again Tony! Congratulations on the launch of the DAILY flights to London Stansted on 1 July. I just had a look at the new flight schedule and noted that many flights will arrive at STN late at night - that will make it difficlut for passengers to connect to other flights from STN on the same day. This might limit the appeal of these flights for people who want to connect to other destinations from STN. The current schedule is more friendly for those who wish to take connecting flights, both at STN and KUL-LCCT.
