The day I cried

Dec 24, 2009
Categories: Employees, Awards

I put on a secondary school pinafore for our eighth annual dinner last week. It’s not that I like being in drag— although I hear it’s become a sort of past time for certain wacky CEOs – but we had a Back to School theme for which I had a colleague to help sort out a costume. She thought it’d be a riot. I thought I looked ridiculous. What can I say? I am too obliging.

It was the usual awesome acts, awesome food, awesome music and even more awesome lucky draw prizes. Every year at our annual party I am awed by how fast and how big AirAsia has grown. We had over 3,000 staff at the bash this year. I’ve lost count. I saw tons of new faces; young, bright and enthusiastic, asking me to join them for a Kodak moment. It was dizzying but always a wonderful feeling to know that more are sharing the AirAsia dream with such passion.

One particular moment really moved me to tears. I’m not one to cry easily. I’ve only shed tears, perhaps four times in my adult life – at both my parents’ funerals and when my two kids were born.

When we opened for business in 2001 we only had two aircraft. People were writing our obituary before we could even take off. Today we have 90 planes (and growing) and we’re crossing continents. ‘Tis a great feeling, confounding skeptics. So you can imagine how emotional it was for me when my staff put on a slide show of photos from the past eight years with Gloria Estefan’s Reach playing in the background. I couldn’t help but sniffle and choke a little. Trust the team at the culture department to tug at the heart strings.

I may be the face of AirAsia but in truth we couldn’t have become the world’s best without our incredible team of people. We’ve built a family of Allstars (that’s what we call our people) and a culture of great service, fun, passion, openness and integrity.

This coming year will be another challenging one. Sounds familiar, yes but it just wouldn’t be an airline business if it were smooth and easy. We’ll be adding more routes to the network and we’ll be focusing a lot more on people development and training because it is our people that will determine our future success.

Watching our Allstars rock the dance floor that night, I wondered what gave this lot their spirit. I realised that at AirAsia they feel liberated and empowered, something few companies in the world can offer.

From the beginning I’ve always wanted to make AirAsia a special place to be. Work needn’t be a drag or a chore and I think we’ve accomplished that to a large extent even though things aren’t always perfect. I’m quite sure our people are some of the most dedicated you will ever find. How else could we have won four awards this year alone? – CAPA’s Airline of the Year, TTG Travel’s Best Asian LCC, Skytrax’s Best Low Cost Airline and Brand of the Year at Media’s Agency of the Year Awards ceremony.

Well done Allstars! You make me proud to be part of such an amazing team.

I seriously admire and respect the relationship you maintain with those who work with/far you. You are jovial, and you understand that people cannot work in a stressed out manner, something CEO of the modern world don't understand. Also, you get close with people from the public, and because of that, people respect you more. You are approachable, you are carefree, yet you are brilliant. What a rare breed.!

Dear Tony, Thanks for shaking my hand that day at KL Zouk, i always wish to meet someone as successful as you. Actually today i just came back from indonesia, 24-12-09 time 3.50pm flight AK9527 from kuching, cos today is chirstmas eve, so i just rush out from plane to meet my family waiting for me. but soon i realised that i accidently left my passport in the Seat A12 front compartment, u know the place that airasia put the magezine and food menu. As soon as i discover i contected almost everyone i could and call almost every helpline i can just to wish someone can help me before the plane takes off, but wat i discover is shocking! All the phones, helpline either is they pass me through some line that disconnected or they just simply pass me to somebody else, the worst part is some of the line is just nobody picking up,(If u dont believe u should try without letting them know u r Tony), Nobody seems to care, and nobody even helping me, after 1 and a half hours i finally give up. I'm a businessman and i travel a lot with airasia, just today this inccedent totally crushed me, i never know that ppl working in airasia can be so cold and selfish. All i ask that is just make sure someone on that flight could just at least helped me to make sure my passport is still there or at least i can have a happy christmas eve night, i know that is my mistake and i know that if i lost the passport, if future it will cost me problems cos i travel alot with my business. But i just dont know y ppl could just be so selfish and even i begging them, they JUST dont care and tell me NO without trying. Wat a warm thanks giving christmas eve with cold hearted ppl. Just a warm helping hand cost them nothing, just some warm words of helping cost them nothing too. This would at least a human can to do to help another human being. "HELP" as simple as that, but at this christmas eve i cant find even a single one person could help me in AirAsia. Sad, not becos of maybe i'm going to lost my passport, is bcos today i discover that human can be so cold and selfish. Speechless........ Merry christmas Tony! Wish i have a good Holiday and Successful coming 2010. Neo Tee Yau

the first thing came to my mind when i heard about the merger of Airasia with Jetstar is........ PLEASE dont remove the big size sandwich made of soft bouncy bread, visible ham and fresh lettuce of Jetstar and replace it with Airasia's nasi lemak.... :-( The first time i saw stewardes in Jetstar carry the appetizing sandwiches accross the seated passenger, i can see that im not the only person fascinated by it, more and more orders are made. i have been travelling mostly with Airasia Flights and as a regular customer; are bored with this dialogue "Sorry M'am we only have Nasi lemak and Cup mee today" but the "today" apparently becomes everyday. Exhausted and bloated after Travelling between countries of differences time and climate and long wait in airport and over-eating during vacation tends to reduce appetite and start craving towards high protein yet less spicy or salty food. I am also proud of M'sian food and hope to promote it worldwide but ofcourse from Business Point of view, when supplies meet demand then Equilibrium will meet...... :-)

hi tony, well if u had worn the prefects' blazer & tie - it would have been hot and sexy but no, you just have to create nightmares for everyone in your office dressing in that hideous looking pinafore! would be great if some of our great malaysian designers should contribute to a new school uniform design soon.....(oooppppsss....this should be posted on zang toi's blog....my apologies) cheers to a good year ahead for airasia :-

Dear Tony, sorry to deviate away from the topic at hand but as a customer and shareholder i hope airasia will be able to rectify the following problem i stumbled upon. i called airasia helpline with a inquiry about the possibility of bringing on board medical equipment (portable oxygen concentrator that is on the FAA approved list) but was not able to get an acceptable answer. the best answer was that it was on a case-by-case basis and only the check-in counter could approve any medical device. whilst i understand that the check-in counter and the captain will have final say on the ability to bring aboard any medical device, i find it surprising that airasia does not have any information/ policy on its website or helpline for people with medical conditions who might have special needs. if you look at singapore airlines, they have a webpage for such information. http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/content/before/plan/specialneeds.jsp#Header6 This makes it easier for people with special needs to at least have an idea how to go about trying to get approval for any medical device they need onboard. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Tony, I think sometimes getting emotional is good for yourself....it can kind of balance yourself from truckload of work. Anyway, haven't post stuff up here for a long time..but i am back now. Without a doubt, everyone in the world can see your work so far, everyone is witnessing the growth of Air Asia. You are part of the member who create the trend of LCC, i can forecast LCC can have a level playfield or even took down the traditional airline to be the future of air travel. Air travel had came a long way, from a few person's advanture to a high class travel, to the age of ''mass travel" and a tool of ''globalisation", and i think we need to continue to the change of trend of EVERYONE CAN AFFORD TO FLY. That's the way for LCC like Air Asia. I am looking forward to see Air Asia grow from a baby child to a real man......so that i have a chance to be emotional for Air Asia. Good Luck and all the best for 2010. Happy New Year to you and all other blog-mates.
