So much has been said about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s 1Malaysia idea.

It’s the right way forward – in fact, I believe it’s the only way forward for this country we all call home. He has many obstacles to overcome to make it a reality. It’s very hard but hopefully he will pace himself and get Malaysia to where he – and, I’m convinced, all patriotic Malaysians – want our nation to be.

If there is any doubt that 1Malaysia is the right way forward for all Malaysians, take a look at AirAsia. Here is a thoroughly local company that has delivered immense benefits to the nation and to all Malaysians, not just any one race – Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans, and others (never quite understood that “others”).

There are many companies in Malaysia that are either Malay-dominated, Chinese-dominated or Indian-dominated. At AirAsia, we pride ourselves on being Malaysian-dominated. And that's why AirAsia thrives. We harness the strengths and talents of Malaysia – all of Malaysia -- and have built an amazing fighting force.

When Dato Kamarudin Meranun, Dato Aziz Bakar, Dato Pahamin Ab Rajab and I first thought of setting up AirAsia, we knew we would need the most talented Malaysians to make it work. We looked beyond race when we began hiring our staff. We sought out the best people – people with passion and conviction, people determined to demonstrate that Malaysians can make it on a global stage if only given the opportunity, people excited about rising to a new challenge. And that’s exactly why we’ve grown from a small airline into a global brand that’s making Malaysia proud.

Meet our Magnificent Seven:

Kamarulzaman Ahmad (Zaman) is someone I met at lunch. A 13-year veteran of Petronas. We had a good chat, and followed by a few more weeks of discussions, he’s now working with AirAsia. And he will be a key driver of AirAsia in the next 10 years.

Azran Osman-Rani and I also got together over a lunch (yep, all these lunches are why I have that weight issue!!). He was previously with McKinsey and Bursa Malaysia and with Astro. Now his success is legendary in helping us create AirAsia X as its CEO.

Sathis Manoharen I met on a flight to Los Angeles. He was in the oil and gas industry at that time. We had a great chat and, naturally, I invited him to join AirAsia. He did, and is now our Regional Head of Cargo – a business he started from scratch and which is already showing potential of becoming a pretty good contributor to our bottom line.

Jasmine Lee is a much more recent addition to the AirAsia family, joining as our Head of Commercial just under a year ago. But she’s fitted into our AirAsia culture like how a bird takes to the skies.

Aireen Omar is a graduate from the London School of Economics and with a Masters from New York University. She worked in New York before returning to Malaysia, doing some serious corporate finance work. But she was bored as well and when invited, came on board AirAsia in an instant. She’s now Regional Head of Corporate Finance, Treasury and Investor Relations.

Lau Kin Choy and I go back nearly two decades, back to our times in the music industry. He’s now our Regional Head of Innovation, Commercial and Technology.

Senthil Danapalan was with MAS, so he was still staying within the same industry when he came to AirAsia. But he can tell you how the work environment at MAS and AirAsia is like the difference between night and day. Senthil handles routes and airport policy at AirAsia X.

Malaysians all, these young, talented, dedicated and passionate people are the future of AirAsia. They, and the others like them in the AirAsia family, are the reason why we believe the future of AirAsia is shining bright. Now it’s up to them to take AirAsia to the next level -- from a Malaysian company to an Asean corporation.

In nine years, we have taken AirAsia from two planes to 86, from 250,000 guests carried in our first year to more than 100 million guests now, and from a staff of 250 to a family numbering almost 8,000 – in the process, creating careers and providing opportunities that rarely existed previously.

We began with a dream: creating a Malaysian company where talent, passion and dedication rather than race, creed or gender are the criteria for advancement. AirAsia has clearly demonstrated that Malaysians have talent – and all they need is the opportunity.

And now we’re dreaming the impossible again: Malaysia first, now Asean. Next stop – the world!!!

Hi Tony Its wonderful that you always encourage talent expecially from various races, gender and age , and the fact that many of them has been involved since the start of the Air Asia venture is realy very refreshing .It shows that not only Air Asia values its customers, but their employees and main drivers too. A lot can be changed if every organisation takes a few minute to give recognisation to their deserved staffs . My Wishess to all and to you too . Peter Pratabh

Dear Tony, I am a shadow teacher/private tutor to a 15+ year old girl with learning disability. Every mid and year end holidays, I will bring her to do some job training at various institutions/organisations. It is only for one week each holiday. I am just wondering and really hoping that you will take us in for a week in December. My student can assist in doing simple task, carrying, showing directions or anything you think fits us, we will give it a try. I can guarantee you that my student and I will be of great help. If you take her in that week, you will get me to work as well for FREE. We are from Kuala Lumpur. I am considering the 3rd week (13-17 Dec). I am looking forward to hear from you, Tony. Thanks. My email: mtshklmsia@yahoo.com. Best regards, Magdalene

Hi Tony, It seems like businesses today forget that people are what business is all about. That's not true of Air Asia Cargo. I'm writing to let you know that Air Asia Cargo is a great example of what a cargo business carrier can be. Well done Mr Sathis for taking your team to the next level of logistics. Not forgetting Mr Azran thanks for all the support and I truly appreciate it. In an age when so many Airlines don't seem to care about customer service any more, Air Asia Cargo does everything you claim you do, with a smile. I’m one satisfied customer, and will continue to be for years to come. Mark MdMustaffa.

I can say that Air Asia is the new Malaysian icon to the world. Air Asia is not only famous for “Now everyone can fly”, but have also commonly known as made possible for cargo to fly, on within the airfreight logistics industry locally and abroad. Due to the reasonable freight pricing has stimulated further trade between countries – by a faster mode of transportation. It has make possible to the industry because of Air Asia and your team, Azran Osman (Air Asia X CEO) and Sathis Manoharen (Regional Head of Cargo) together with the whole cargo team.

Hi Tony, This is such an inspiring blog with so energetic content. While I was reading this blog, I came across with very familiar names. - this names that gift most of the small business community like myself and thousands more other in Sabah. I started my own small business selling all sort of things from garments to perishable item from Kota Kinabalu to all parts of Malaysia. Honestly, we were the supporter National carrier. We were also made to believe cheap rate will give “cheap” service. But I can say today by using AirAsia, but we are happy and satisfied. We have been taken for granted for being small contributor in the cargo industries, we could hardly gain space as the big boys is in “control”. So we were forced to look for other alternatives- AIRASIA. From 100kg to 1000kg, the experience with AirAsia was enjoyable. I got the treatment of VIP with small amount to pay. But the greatest experience of all was having the opportunity to meet with the AirAsia team which I think no Legacy Airline will do. “MANAGEMENT direct to CUSTOMER”. As bright and energetic they are, I still cannot believe how down to earth they are. Now my business has survive with the good rate’s AirAsia has to offered. I’m also being using AirAsia's successfully built cargo booking system to booked and tracked the shipment. You guys really give more and more hope to small business community like us and keep to your words that “EVERYONE CAN FLY” which I think should be change to “EVERYONE CAN DREAM THE SUCCESS”. Now I’m looking forward to expand my business towards international sector. Heard that the BIG BOSS, Mr Datuk Tony Fernandes is a down to earth person, thats why the culture is in all the AirAsia team. -Annonymus- (Anyone can read this including other airline)

Hello Tony - your lunch with Azran & Sathis is truly a blessed lunch - today we have both sucessful guys who were NEVER from the Cargo industry but i can say, they know what they are doing - as an industry player myself, Air Asia Cargo has given a new breath to small & medium sized players.Air Asia Cargo coupled with Sathis and your Cargo Dream Team - sending cargo is no longer a complicated process. I am also learning from you - giving everyone a chance with a clear direction - nothing is impossible!

Tony, it's truly commendable how you have heralded your team sky high... It's a breath of fresh air as compared to how ceo's these days are telling their people point blank that they are dispensable. I believe that we share the same values, 'Dream big and the impossible is only as far as your mind would limit you. ' As such, I will look for opportunities to join AA after I complete my Strathclyde MBA. Just dropping a line to commend your cabin crew onboard flight ak715 on 12/11 bound for Singapore. Dinesh, Khuh & Priscilla are a very fine example of passion and service excellence. Khuh actually made her way down the aisle and turned on reading lights for the passengers as the cabin lights were being dimmed for takeoff. Dinesh actually took the pains to address some passengers' query on cabin luggage being a source of safety hazard. This was really impressive as the only airlines in my opinion which takes passenger safety extremely seriously is SIA. This 'magic' that your stars have created is wonderful and would make AA totally unrivalled if all the rest of your allstars can replicate that same zest that this cabin crew had.

Datuk, AirAsia is indeed a Malaysian first airline...and as a Singaporean, I salute you and your A-team for transforming AirAsia from a domestic player to regional player and slowly but surely, a global player in the aviation industry. Kudos!

This article touched me deeply as I share your business philosophy aimed at achieving s a united Malaysian nation. With the expanding passenger, cargo air routes, initially at the national level then ASEAN and slowly global arena and parallel expansion of the hotel industry, you are providing opportunities for many young talents of all ethnic groups to work as a team. Perhaps, members of the team, partcularly your Magnificent Seven, may wish to share their experiences, as you have in different fora such as the blog or Facebook, of their success in stepping up the ladder in the Air Asia and Tune Hotel outfits. Their true life experiences will serve as inspiration to many. At the same time I trust Air Asia is also building a culture of the seniors guiding the younger ones in the fundamentals of work ethics, courtesy, and working with their hearts, as demonstrated by many of your employees in the performance of their duties. In this way AA can develop a critical mass of employees with the right work ethics, courtesies and considerates. May your Companies continue to be blessed with success.

Well , some airlines were charging thousands for a trip to India, and foreign workers were going back to their country every 2 or 3 years as the fare was so high. Now they are going to their countries 3 times a year. All these years these airlines were robbing people !! Now they can bring the price down, down to 5 times their previous price !! The high fare not only affecting workers but also tourists !! Now many tourists are flocking into Malaysia. PM eying more tourists next year. Tourism industry has grown this year.-------------- For students studying in East Malaysia , balik kampung to JB Penang or KL is not a matter now !! check fare with Airasia and fly !!. ---------- London is gateway to Europe! Muslims prefer Airasia as the meal is Halal !! .-------------- Many people want to go to Dubai and Saudi Arabia. Hopefully for next Aidil Adha pilgrims can travel to Jeddah by Airasia X .-------------- Landing in Trichy is convenient for all. Trichy is nearer to many cities. Airasia is first airline to fly KL Trichy. Tiger follows the trail after seeing the success. But ....... the fare ? .------- I remember 30 Sep 2008, 12 AM Trichy sales launched, the next afternoon, many flights were full !!! I think it was Malaysian record !! .-------------- A320 is best choice as it can land in most airports .-------------- Sri Lankans living in Australia and London, have a chance to have a hot nasi lemak at LCCT and go to their country ! They are now transiting through Kuala Lumpur. .-------------- Now foreign worker, business man, student and every one can fly !! Hope to see better improvement in payment system and also the call centre !!

Its really great to come about recognizing these team members and their effort as well as contribution in bringing the team to the right direction. People in organization appreciate comments such as this. I was just watching a tamil film last night "Vasool Raja" a Kamal Hassan hit movie whereby he gave a hug to a person who mops the hospital floor and appreciate the great work he is doing. The person was so touched as the Head of the Hospital dont even know what is he doing. With that said, THANK YOU Sir for taking some time in appreciating your staff as well as your team. All the best to AIR ASIA for 2011

It was way back in August 2002 when my eldest son, Jaakeesh Varma was sitting for his UPSR exam that year. That was the year also that I came to know about AirAsia. Surely, "Everyone Can Fly" was meant to me and my family. It was RM 29.90 to fly to Langkawi. Something I can afford compare to driving or even by bus. They were many who says, are you sure?, they use second hand plane, 3rd class pilots, etc. But, for me, if that guy can have confidence in his plane then definitely he don't want to see his plane down. I told my wife, he will double ensure that all his plane are fit to fly. Coming back to my son, his exam is only 2 months away and I am already taking him for his holiday. Frankly, I don't know how I made the decision but we had a great time in Langkawi. And that was the first time we flew as a family. Not to forget, my son scored 5 A's in his UPSR exam. His present, gave him already what!!! So, to that guy who has confidence in his 'second hand' planes... Thank you from the bottom of my heart. As I have always believe..."The Best Part Of Life Is Living". When you have living in you...nothing stops in between. Magen Melaka

I’ve always been a city girl. When I got a job with AirAsia and, have to be based @ LCCT, friends were asking, why would you want to work so far? * As my mum was a geography teacher, I grew up traveling, and meeting people of diffrent nationalities and backgrounds: I grew up not seeing colors. Racial discrimintaion and segregation bug me. The first thing I noticed when I entered the office for the interview, how colorful the people working @ AA are. I knew right there and then, this is where I would want to be working at. Working here in AA is wonderful. We really mixed around, regardless the color of our skin, or our position in the company. One word to describe us Allstars: none other than "1Malaysia", or "1World" * Everyday, when I walk thru our vibrant red reception, with the buzzes of the colorful AllStars rushing going out and in the office, all I can think of, why would I not want to work here? Thank you Tony for creating the atmosphere.
